FAQ

What is the ideal temperature to set your thermostat to stay comfortable and save energy?

Maintaining a consistent indoor air temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, though some are more comfortable in a warmer environment during summer. Adjust based on your personal comfort. However, we do not advise turning the air conditioning lower than 70 degrees.

Why does my furnace thermostat have a blank screen?
Don’t panic. Most of the time, the reason your furnace thermostat has a blank screen is because the batteries need to be replaced. Other reasons include a tripped circuit breaker, faulty wiring or a failed thermostat.

How often should I change the air filter in my HVAC system?
How long an HVAC air filter lasts depends on its width. We recommend changing 1-inch filters bi-weekly and 6-inch filters every six months. However, variables like how many people live in the home, whether anyone is a smoker or if you have pets (and how many) factor into the equation. Your best bet is to become a Ryan Priority Service member so a professional can assess your filter on a regular basis and provide recommendations based on your situation.

What does a humidifier do for your HVAC system?
A whole house humidifier helps maintain a prime humidity level of 35% to 60%. Bacteria and viruses form at levels lower than 35% and mold spores grow when air is in the 60%-plus range, so a humidifier can improve indoor air quality. Also, a humidifier can help prevent expansion and contraction of woodwork during winter such as window frames and trim.

How do I know when to replace my HVAC system?
The average life expectancy of an HVAC system is 12 to 15 years. You can sustain the life of your HVAC system with consistent service and filter changes, and it’s a good idea to have your HVAC system serviced twice per year. If you are enrolled in the Ryan Priority Service Program for residential and commercial customers, you will get VIP access to immediate service, regular HVAC filter changes, discounted HVAC maintenance, energy savings audits and more.

Why is my furnace burning so much oil?
A dirty oil-burning furnace will burn more oil. Ignoring maintenance of your oil furnace flue can also cause the system to work harder, reducing efficiency and creating safety risks, not to mention, costly repairs.
